Happy Halloween!

Halloween 2012

Halloween 2012 was a last minute costume idea. Jonathan and I dressed up as the National Bohemian Beer guy and the Utz Potato Chip girl. Natty Boh (Baltimore, MD) and Utz (Hanover, PA) are both semi-local companies and they are already in love like us so it seemed fitting. Also, J's beverage of choice is Natty Boh.

For all of you new readers here are our costumes from past years:

Oh, shitake!

shitake1 shitake3shitake2

Oh, shitake! Shitake mushrooms that is. The husband has been on a fungus kick for a while and as a gift idea I was going to get him a mushroom grow kit. This one I had my eye on from Back to the Roots that grows oyster mushrooms. Well I guess Jonathan spotted my "like" of the company on Facebook and decided to do his own research on growing mushrooms. He found shitake mushroom block kits from Mississippi Natural Products and now we have fungus blooming on our kitchen counter. The next step for the mister is to create his own mushroom blocks to grow shitakes and like mushrooms year round. He is just a tad obsessed.

Now I guess I need some recipes for mushrooms since we have a TON in our house! Send me your favorite mushroom recipes in the comment section please!!!

It is apple season here in Pennsylvania! So grab some apples and make something delicious this weekend like this homemade applesauce!

When I said I got distracted by a box of apples last weekend I wasn't joking! I bought a box full of Jonathan apples for $10 at the flea market with dreams of making all things apple. I made multiple batches of applesauce and decided to share the SUPER EASY recipe with you. No special equipment is needed! Applesauce can be canned or frozen to last all winter!

Supplies needed:
Approximately 3-4 pounds of apples
1 cup water
1 Cinnamon Stick
1 Teaspoon Ground cinnamon
1 Tablespoon sugar

applesauce1 applesauce2

Step 1: Cut, core and peel 3-4 pounds of apples. Thicker slices take longer to cook.

Step 2: Combine apples, water and optional cinnamon, cinnamon stick and sugar. Simmer in stock pot over low heat with the lid on. Stir occasionally.

Step 3: Once the apples are soft then mash the apples. This can be done multiple different ways, with a potato masher, hand mixer or whatever thing I found at a yard sale above!

Step 4: EAT! Applesauce can be stored in glass jars in your fridge, canned and sealed to last on the shelf or in freezer containers for up to a year.

Jonathan on my email address

"You throw your email around like people throw pennies out."

I can quite remember the exact conversation that sparked this little gem from my husband but I laughed so hard at this comment that I did cry. Now I remember, I was talking about a cute little restaurant downtown and I said I wasn't sure how they got my email but they sent me a news letter. That's it. I just can't help it but get on all these mailing lists. What if they send me coupon codes? Jonathan can't stand the amount of emails that junk up my inbox in a day.

Who can join me in the 100 emails a day club??

road trip 2012: Graceland

Road Trip 2012: 3rd stop Memphis, TN and Graceland the home of King

So yeah, Graceland and Memphis, TN. Still couldn't tell you why exactly we traveled to Memphis. I mean I like Elvis, I grew up listening to Elvis's music and watching his movies but I wouldn't call myself a crazy number one fan. We soon found out that we were probably the only non-Elvis fanatics up in that town. We saw people who traveled from Australia to visit Graceland. AUSTRALIA! Anyways, I enjoyed visiting Graceland. I liked seeing all the super Elvis fans. I especially liked the car museum and seeing the famous pink Cadillac.

More Memphis to come and the story to my bad attitude towards Memphis.

Tell me, have you ever been to Memphis and/or live there? What are your opinions?

the weekend

weekend6 weekend7 weekend8

This weekend was my favorite kind of weekend. No plans. I had a list of things to accomplish and now that I'm looking at the list, not much of it was crossed off. We got distracted by sleeping in, a trip to the flea market, brunch and a box of apples. That's okay.

How was your weekend??

Sunday with the Sisters

Two very sad fur sisters because their parents were having a busy day of cleaning and other projects. So these two sat on a chair and pouted. All day.

Also, Joy was pouting because she still was wearing a Halloween costume. Pearl wiggled out of hers Saturday night.

(weekend diy) Crochet fabric yarn circle rug

I've been working on this rug for a couple of weeks now. I'm excited to finally share it with you!!! It was a work in progress since I needed to collect the right color of t-shirts as I worked. I made the rug the colors of my bedroom decor which is yellow, white and gray. The pattern is very similar to the base of the basket I created, just on a larger scale!

Supplies needed:
Fabric Yarn (here is my T-shirt Yarn tutorial)
Any fabric strips will work however. I used approximately 18 t-shirts.
15MM Crochet hook
Stitch Markers
Large Yarn Needle

For my rug I used each t-shirt until I ran out. If you want a more even stripe to your rug, start and stop a different color at the beginning of a round.

Ch 6 and join with a sl st.
Place a marker at your first stitch to remember your rounds.
Rnd 1: 2 sc in each st around - equaling 12 sts.
Rnd 2: Sc in each st.
Rnd 3*2 sc in next st, sc in next st; rep from * around - equaling 18 sts.
Rnd 4*2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts; rep from * around.
Rnd 5*2 sc in next st, sc in next 4 sts; rep from * around.
Rnd 6*2 sc in next st, sc in next 6 sts; rep from * around.
Rnd 7*2 sc in next st, sc in next 8 sts; rep from * around.
Rnd 8-10: Sc in each st.
Rnd 11*2 sc in next st, sc in next 9 sts; rep from * around.
Rnd 12*2 sc in next st, sc in next 10 sts; rep from * around.
Rnd 13*2 sc in next st, sc in next 12 sts; rep from * around.
Rnd 14-23*2 sc in next st, sc in next 14 sts; rep from * around.
Rnd 24-29: Sc in each st.
Rnd 30-32:  *2 sc in next st, sc in next 16 sts; rep from * around.
Rnd 30-35Sc in each st.

Rug will finish at approximately 40" in diameter.
Fasten off and weave in ends. The rug will flatten once used and on a flat surface.

Ch: Chain
sc: single crochet
sl st: slip stitch
st: stitch

Leave a comment if you have any questions!
Now my fur ladies have a new favorite place to sleep! Have fun!

Fall Hike to flat rock

This weekend we spent a little time outdoors with family. We hiked a short 2.5 mile trail to Flat Rock for some fall foliage views. The scenery was still quite green but the weather was beautiful and it was nice spending the afternoon with one of Jonathan's sisters and her husband and his mama.

Road trip 2012: blue ridge parkway

blueridge5 blueridge6 blueridge4 blueridge1 blueridge7 blueridge3 blueridge2

Road Trip 2012: The Blue Ridge Parkway aka really long out of the way scenic route

When I talked about the scenic route we took, it was the Blue Ridge Parkway. This road meets up with the Skyline Drive and takes you south. We were headed south so we thought we could see some beautiful views while on the drive rather than the sights off I-81 S which are borrrrrring! The sights were beautiful and we found the cutest sunflower field on the top of a mountain. What wasn't cute was going up those mountains pulling the camper. Also adding 2 1/2 hours of car time to our trip wasn't that cute either.
With that being said, I don't regret our little scenic detour. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a route I would like to explore farther. It extends south way farther than we went. For another trip then.

Have you driven the Blue Ridge Parkway? What are your thoughts and how far did you travel?

BFF weekend

downingtown1 downingtown2 downingtown3 downingtown4 downingtown5 downingtown6 downingtown7

My super duper friend, Amanda recently moved back to Pennsylvania from the state of Oregon. That was a looooong distance friendship. Luckily I would see here when she came home to visit and I was fortunate enough to vacation out at her old crib in the Pacific Northwest two summers ago. Now she is back and living in the West Chester area. Jonathan and I crashed at her new place last weekend. We had a lot of fun and sampled a lot of wine and beer. From the pictures that were taken it only looks like all we did was drink but that is not the case, but the drinking is what I'll tell you about.

We stopped at Kreutz Creek Vineyards wine tasting room in downtown West Chester. Then some shopping happened (found this cute vintage shop and fought over a necklace).  We hit up Iron Hill Brewery for a beer. And some time later we went to Victory Brew Pub for dinner, drinks and a growler fill up for back at the house.

I'm glad my friend is now a short car ride away rather than the span of the country!
