Furry Fridays: Of Corgis & Cocktails

Brought to you by Steph and Becky!
Give a big furry welcome to Katherine from Of Corgis & Cocktails! Thanks for joining in on the fun Katherine!!

me and my corgi

My corgi mix Teemo and I were meant to be together. I called a local humane society  to try and adopt him on Valentine's Day, but he was in the process of being adopted. When I called back a bit later, what I believed to be my dream pup was adopted and gone. But no! The next day I noticed him still up on Petfinder, despite other dogs being taken down over the night, and called again. He had been returned! We rushed to the humane society with our other pup and fell in complete love. Most of us anyway. I'm still not sure Raynor, our basset mix, is always so enthralled by sharing the attention.

teemo & me

Teemo may love me a bit too much. He follows me everywhere and stays within a certain radius of me at the dog park. Only thing he loves more is food. He really, really loves food. He may have gained 5 pounds over the past year as the two of us living alone for a year means he shares a lot of my meals. Oops! His best feature - by the way - is his oh-so-charming overbite. He's not 100% corgi - he's a mutt - so he's a little different. We joke that he is a corgi, fox, ferret, and terrier mix. He also has a lot of bow ties, ties, and jackets to dress up in. He's a fairly ridiculous dog.

Rocks a Lot of Polka Dots

I have another pup too. She's our baby princess and our first dog. Raynor is just now turning 4 years old and definitely a girl after my own heart. Raynor and I are both playful, hyperactive freaks who hate when you wake us up from sleep. She's the strongest dog I have ever met and knocked down a 350 pound fountain in my in-laws' yard once. She has been in Florida keeping my husband company while he went to grad school over the past year, and I am excited to have her back with me now.

You can see a lot more of these two pop up on my blog at Of Corgis & Cocktails.

(WEEKEND DIY) Reclaimed Wood Thread Hanger

I have a problem with thread organization! So many colors and spools EVERYWHERE! All the store bought organizers where super lame so my husband and I brainstormed at how we could make a holder for my thread and bobbins that was easy to make but would fit in with our home decor! We can up with this SUPER EASY project that looks and works just how I like.

Supplies Needed:
A wood board - mine is a found piece of an old home. You could also use old shutters or paint a piece of new lumber.
3" Finishing Nails

Step 1: Determine the placement of your "hangers" (aka nails). My board was 7.5" wide - Nail placements are 1" from each side and 2.5" apart and each row is 2.5" apart. These numbers may need adjusted depending on your board width and length. Place your thread spools on the nails to visualize the spacing.

Step 2: Once you've marked your nail placements then hammer in your nails. The nails should no be straight out, you want them to be angled up slightly so the thread stays on better.

Step 3: On the top back of your piece attach a sawtooth hanger and hang on your wall!

Like I said super easy! Once I found the piece of wood, the project was done in under 30 minutes.

Please leave me a comment if you have any questions!

Also please contact me with the link if ever complete any of these Weekend DIY projects and I will link up with you!!!

Non-Retail Black Friday

I worked retail for almost 10 years of my life so I have absolutely no desire to ever be at a retail establishment with a shit load of people at a crazy early morning hour ever again. I went Black Friday shopping once since my retail slave years and it was awful so I skip shopping that day. I know I could have scored a crock pot for $8 or got 60% off at Joann's, but I can't deal with it.

So last year we decided to skip the shopping and go hiking and I thought it was a great idea that should be turned into a tradition. 2nd Annual Black Friday Hike was on like Donkey Kong. We hiked the short trail up to Pole Steeple for look out views and caught up with the Appalachian Trail for a long way down. Our little tradition is a nice way to work off all those extra pieces of pie from the day before and avoid frustration central in the retail world!

Hope everyone enjoyed their holiday weekend! I'm still on mine until tomorrow morning!!

I Will Cut You if you don't enter my giveaway

At work they call me Strawberry Shortcake because they say I'm always happy, singing and dancing. It takes a lot to piss me and from what people have learned you DON'T piss Strawberry Shortcake off or you'll get cut. I try to keep a positive attitude towards life and that's why I keep this space pretty positive because I hate Debbie Downers so I'm just not going to be one. But dude, Friday night required a large bottle of wine because someone had pissed Strawberry Shortcake off hardcore. Now, I don't even remember the multiple things that happened to make me want to punch every person I came in contact with....
so now this is a very long winded reminder to enter my SHARE YOUR STYLE GIVEAWAY

Hop over there and enter the giveaway for one of my handmade yoyo headbands. I will be picking a winner tomorrow night. Good luck and don't piss me off!

Road Trip 2012: Memphis

Road Trip 2012: Memphis, TN

Memphis started off fine. We ate at Marlowe's which may have been touristy but they picked us up from our campsite in a pink Cadillac limo and the food was bangin' and then the next morning toured Graceland. When we got back to the camper after Graceland the little tin can was crazy hot even with the AC on full blast, we thought we could find some cool (temperate and fashionable) shops or what not downtown to beat the heat. Man it was freakin' hot. By the time we made it downtown our vehicle was overheating with the air on. We parked at what our map said was a happening square and walked and walked and found nothing. By this time my dress was soaked with sweat and I wanted to punch someone in the face. We left town to find a source of AC (movie theater) and returned to the downtown once it had cooled off some. The famous Beale Street was our destination and to tell you the truth if I was writing this post right after our return home I would have blasted Memphis and Beale Street, but now I realize I was in such a crummy mood from the heat the town was not to blame. I can see how people love Beale Street. You could walk around drinking extremely large fruity cocktails like me. You can hear live music in every restaurant and bar. I however hated every minute of it and if it wasn't for the alcohol I was consuming I probably would have had a temper tantrum in the middle of the street. (Jonathan says I did have a temper tantrum though FYI). I can't write it off entirely since my bad mood clouded my judgement but I can say it wasn't my favorite day of the trip.

Jonathan on My Cooking Skills

"You're good at cooking, but DAMN do you make a mess whenever you do anything!"

Jonathan is right. I can't make anything without a large mess involved. After I make a meal or even just grilled cheese for lunch there is always a reminder that I was there left on the counters. It may be as little as bread crumbs, or like the week of Halloween when I made dirt for a work party, Oreo crumbs and pudding splatter covering any open counter space. Something else I'm guilty of is using the stove as a counter top. Our counter space is limited, so for example, I'll mix pancake batter on the stove top. Dude, I'm going to be making the pancakes right there makes since to mix it where I will be using it! Only problem is that I will spill pancake batter all over a burner then the next time we have to use that burner it will burn off and stink up the house. Oh, forgot to mention I am HORRIBLE at cleaning up my kitchen escapades. Jonathan follows me around with a sponge when I'm working a culinary masterpiece to clean up the pieces. So I guess he has a right to complain a little at my mess but I did just force him to buy a dishwasher to help with the clean up process!

Furry Fridays: A Geek In Glasses

Brought to you by Steph and Becky
This is our second week of Furry Friday! I'm Stephanie of A Geek In Glasses sharing with you this week my fur family. Also, say Hi to my awesome co-host, Becky from B is for Becky.
Let's meet the crew:
AJ, our 1st German Shorthair Pointer. He is 11 years old and hates Maple Trees. He is Houdini incarnate and has cost us a small fortune in household repairs. His story is simple, I needed a fur friend, I went to the new "humane" pet store in town and picked this monster. We call him a pre-rescue because I don't believe anyone else would have dealt with his shenanigans the way we have. Over three years of dog training school, he has learned to pick your pocket, open locks and wreak havoc in an advanced class sit/stay demonstration with over 10 dogs. (It was a proud momma moment )  I am glad that we got him, because he would take a bullet for you then steal your holiday pie while you're getting coffee. ( Which is one drink he will not drink. His second week with us he drank an Irish Coffee that was sitting on the floor by the fire. Let's just say it didn't sit well with the pup and he hasn't touched the stuff since.) Oh - do you want to know what AJ stands for, Almond Joy - because Almond Joys have nuts, Mounds don't.
Next is the lovely Brownie, named for her chocolately color, is a wonderful pet. Another German Shorthair Pointer, we picked her out of a litter of champion hunters at a hunting preserve. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this dog. I love her. She is 10 now and until we moved from CT to PA she never barked. She would moo like a cow, but never barked.  The first night she and I stayed alone in the house on the farm there was a noise in the woods and she found her bark. She is totally obsessed with playing fetch, we played for 8 hours straight one day. She also loves a good yarn party - think cat and yarn ball only bigger animal and the yarn is tied around everything in the house. She is the best.
Then there is Jack. What can I say about Jack...Well, we rescued him on December 23. We went to get a Female Pointer, white with tan markings. When we got there He was neither Female nor Pointer - but he came home anyways. An odd dog who loves his little girl more than anything in the world, has a lot of issues. We continue to deal with his fear of people and his food aggression/obsession.  He is to be a year old now and we believe his is full size which is what I call a medium dog. It's like perma-puppy!
My biggest piece of advice to anyone looking for a pet is to know your breed. This goes for cats as well as dogs. We have had 4 German Shorthair Pointers, 2 rescues, 2 from pups. That breed is super high energy and needs a high protein diet. They have obsessive compulsive issues, the one jumps 5 feet in the air non-stop for hours, one is obsessed with ball play, one was obsessively clean - a nightly bath that started at 10 o'clock every night and lasted for at least half an hour, and one that had a fear (snarly, growly fear) of paper products such as tissues, paper towels and paper plates which lead to obsessive destruction of said items while no one was looking.  This breed also likes a job to do, hunter by nature, a police department in New England started using them as drug finders.
What do you do when you don't know the breed of a rescue? I suggest trying to figure out some parts of the creature, it might help you get to know the inner thoughts of the animal and why they do what they do.  Take Jack for instance, we thought he was part Pointer, that could be true but it is more likely that he is a Lab. He has webbed feet like the water retrievers but he also has terrier parts. The terrier in him explains the digging, mousing, and acute hearing. What do you do with that info? It tells you that the Terrier in him is going to make him high strung and the Lab in him will make him a more snuggle love family pup. The Lab makes him good with kids, the Terrier could possess some "looking for a fight" tendencies so I'm glad that the kid is a little older and he knows his place on the "Alpha" family tree.
That's our fur family and my suggestion to all of you in search of a new furry family member. Good Luck and have a great weekend!

Bits of Becky Lately

Watching: I just discovered the show Ben and Kate. It's in the Tuesday night line up with New Girl so that's how I found it and it's super funny.

Listening: So I went to see an off Broadway production of Wicked this past weekend. Man, I've been singing those songs all week. I also might be jamming out to the Wicked station on Pandora all day.....

Reading: My book news is not good news (aka haven't moved on from what I was reading a month ago). In blog reading, my new favorite blog read is Madalynne. She lives in the same state as me, has the same passions as me (pattern making and the fashion industry) and her site is just so darn pretty!

Crafting: I'm still mad crocheting. I'm building some patterns to feature here so hopefully I will get them up for you soon!

Offline: I FINALLY got a hair cut. Why did home girl think she should grow her hair out?!?! Plus I talked my stylist into giving me an undercut. Mine isn't this hardcore yet, but one day.

What's happening in your life lately?

Central Pennsylvania Wine Tour

The weekend before the super storm Sandy hit the area we traveled around the Central Pennsylvania area for a wine tour! The Hershey Harrisburg Wine Country hosted a tour to promote the wine industry in the area. It's an industry that I didn't even know was so big around us! The tour allowed you to tour and taste wines from 10 different wineries. We made it to four with Cassel Vineyards being a favorite of the group. The vineyards grows 80% of the grapes they use for their wines. Quite impressive! I feel like I need to continue my exploration of Pennsylvania wineries! Annnnnnnd also continue drinking wine. Of all kinds.

Side note on Pennsylvania. A friend pointed this out to me and I found it funny. When people ask Pennsylvanians where we are from most of us say PA, not Pennsylvania. I know I do this and even on here I tend to just write PA. Is this common with other states too? Maybe it's a Central PA thing?
