Bits of Becky: October

October!!!!! Did I blog at all in October? Let me look... Yes I did! Whoa, I'm more amazing than I thought! Life hasn't slowed down over here. Now I attend birth classes some nights and breastfeeding seminars other nights. I'm a busy, big bellied girl.

Anyways, here is what's been happening in my life lately and with some Instagram shots from the month! (follow me @bforbecky)

Reading: I did read a book too! I finished Losing Hope by Colleen Hoover. Which after being 90% done with the book I discover it's the 2nd book in a series which KILLS me to know I read a book out of order! Grrrrrrrrrrr.

Watching: Jonathan recently became addicted to Revolution so we are watching that series from the beginning. It gives me nightmares thinking about the end of the world as we know it. Not a good show to watch when you are about to bring a baby into the world.

Listening: The Head and the Heart just released their new album, Let's Be Still and I am loving it big time.

Crafting: My crocheted baby blanket is FINALLY COMPLETE!!!!! So now that means I have 100,000 other crafts I want to make for baby have begun!

Offline: Birth classes, doctors appointments, blogger meet up, murder mystery dinner, and Halloween. Did I mention 1000000000 things I need to do before the mini Stets is here?

Photo Info: Classic J, Joy's extreme fur cut, more classic J, pin up photo shoot interrupted by a train, J painting the changing table, my mantle, crafting a quilt, classic PA scenery, Hburg cupcake battle, the catacombs, Terrain, and Halloween.

Bump Update

Just the bump saying what's up.

Cape My, NJ

I'm hoarding my vacation time for when the baby comes, but this summer still called for a beach trip. So back in September Jonathan and I took the little Scotty camper to Cape May, NJ. I've never been to this cute little town (heck I've never been to the Jersey shore! I'm usually a Maryland shore girl.) but it came highly recommended and had a close campground so we tried it. Our campground was only 1 mile from the beach and town so it made it easy for us to bike around to see all the sights. The town is super cute and more low key than most beach towns I'm used to. Even though my lack of vacation time only allowed for a long weekend there we still had a fantastical time.

Things we did: Ate at the local favorite Hotdog Tommy's and Lobster House, beach time, relaxing, sight seeing the cute little houses in Cape May on our bikes and eating lots of ice cream. Cape May we're coming back for longer next summer for sure.

Jonathan on Baby Bellies

Me: "Can you please not touch me right now?"
Jonathan: "That's MY baby's house so I can touch it when I want."

Also, this is the most hilarious picture to me. We don't take ourselves to seriously around here. Plus this was taken at a winery because I'm the classy pregnant DD at winery tastings.

Bits of Becky: September

Umm, can someone please tell me where September went? Like for reals.
Ever since I've discovered I'm growing a bun in my oven time has flown by faster than normal. One day it's Monday and I feel like I wake up and it's Sunday morning and I have to do the whole damn thing over again. I have no time to breath. There is so much to do and I finally feel like I am getting things accomplished. My work schedule is back to normal so I'm not getting home after 7pm exhausted and with barely enough energy to eat. So hopefully I will start kicking butt and getting important things squared away like, painting a baby nursery and  finishing my baby blanket that I started WHEN I FOUND OUT I WAS PREGNANT! That was over 5 months ago!
Anyways, here is what's been happening in my life lately and with some Instagram shots from the month! (follow me @bforbecky)

Reading: I just finished Bringing Up Bébé by Pamela Druckerman. I felt like I had to read some motherly books but I didn't want anything terrifying or anything that would lecture me so I chose this one. Now I'm done with motherly books.

Watching: New Fall TV is back on. The only thing I can say I've actually watched though is How I Met Your Mother. It's the last season so I have to watch it so we can finally learn how Ted meets this mother lady.

Listening: Dr Dog's album B-Room was JUST released days ago. Please go check it out. They're my favorite and this latest album does not disappoint.

Crafting: Like I mentioned earlier that baby blanket is still killing my crafting time. Well, what little crafting time I have.

Offline: Time with friends, craft night devoted to making wedding ribbon wands, painting rooms other than the nursery, nesting, cleaning out closets and attics, baby registering and lots of showers (baby and wedding).
Photo Info: Man love on a hammock, Jon and Pearl patheticness, awkward Pearl, Joy hiding in laundry, new living room paint, and Jon practicing is baby holding skills.

PA LOVE: Antiques Capital, USA

Antiques Capital, USA
Adamstown, PA
aka an area in Lancaster County that has more antique stores than you can shop in one day

On one of my summer Fridays off from work my friend and I craved some antique shopping. We headed to Lancaster County after hearing all this jazz about a mecca of antique stores in one area. After a full day of shopping (9am to 5pm) we had only ventured through 4 of of the 18 that are advertised! So for anyone into roaming antique stores this is the place to be.

My favorite (and the store where all the above pictures were taken at) was the Mad Hatter Antique Mall. There was a back corner of the shop that I pretty much could have just died in there was so much amazing merchandise. Plus a whole Pyrex room and Fiesta room!

Let's just say I need to go back to hit up the other shops I missed!

Pregnancy: Hormones like Whoa

Crazy hormones are the one thing you will have during your pregnancy. If you think period hormones are bad just wait until you get pregnancy hormones, it's like triple the craziness. I've experienced crying from laughter, crying from joy, and crying just because Jonathan ate the last yogurt. My hormones calmed down a bit from the beginning, well until this week. Week 23 of pregnancy the extreme hormones came back like a slap in the face, hard and unexpected. This time around however my hormones didn't make me have mood swings from happy to sad in 3.5 seconds, they made me hate everyone. This is not an exaggeration. I was filled with so much anger and hate this week it is almost comical. I would get angry just looking at someone. I had a "shit list" that pretty much included everyone I saw and some people I didn't even have to look at I added them to the top of the list. The proof of the raging angry hormones came out on my face in the form of teenager zits all over. Joy.

What's up with that baby?

Have you other mamas or mamas to be had crazy hormones that filled you with rage? Please tell me I'm not the only one.

Also an apology should be issued to Jonathan since he got the brunt of the anger.

Furry Fridays: You Gotta Have Hart

Brought to you weekly by Becky and Steph!
Meet Jamie and her fur baby Levi.

T.G.I.F. Folks!
When I got this little fella, I was back living at home with my Parent's, newly unemployed, and the last thing I needed was another "dog".  My Parent's had gone to Montana for two weeks and while they were gone, I got a "wild hair".  I called my friend Nina and we found a Shih Tzu breeder about 45 minutes away and went to look at babies! When I called the breeder, she advised me that the puppies were only six weeks old so I wouldn't be able to bring one home but I could pick one out, leave a down payment, and then come back in two weeks to take it home.  I knew better than that!  Even Nina knew that I had skills and could convince a blind man to buy a TV-- so we were leaving with a puppy!  FYI: *Most puppies cannot be sold before eight weeks of age.  This is because they need to be vaccinated and fully weaned.  (I have worked for Animal Hospitals, etc and am fully trained, so this is not an issue.  I would NOT recommend just anyone doing so.  I did sign paperwork stating that I was fully responsible for any issues that may occur with the puppy due to it's age.)

Levi is such a special puppy and has brought so much love and enjoyment to my life.  I wouldn't trade him for a million dollars!  He has a crazy love of tennis balls!  I do not how how this started or even who gave him his first tennis ball.  He literally goes insane over them. When he finds one, he will harass you left and right to throw them and when the night is over, we have to hide them, so that he will quiet down and go to sleep! Levi is also very spoiled.. he gets plenty of bones and squeaky toys (which drive me insane because he has to destroy the squeaker-- and usually does so within minutes!).
Honestly, I have worked for numerous Animal Hospitals, Groomers, Wildlife Rescues, and more.. I've also owned numerous dogs (it feels so bad calling them that because they were ALL my babies!), but Levi has surpassed ALL expectations of what a loved pet could be.  He makes me laugh when my face is stuck on a frown and when I'm crying.. this guy literally wipes my tears.  While I am a BIG advocate for adopting pets from your Animal Shelter, and my next pet will be adopted.. Levi has been the greatest lil guy ever!

I want to leave you with a few tips about Shih Tzu's and their care:
--Shih Tzu's eyes water, and A LOT!  Their hair will also grow into their eyes and if not properly groomed, can cause them to lose their eyesight (from hair poking at their eyeball).  It's important that you keep this hair properly groomed and cleaned.  (I've actually owned a Shih Tzu that had an eye removed due to eye trauma)
--Shih Tzu's are prone to ear infections.  They need their ears properly cleaned and the hair pulled from them on a monthly if not on a every other month basis.  I DO NOT recommend you doing this on your own.  HAVE A PROFESSIONAL GROOMER DO THIS. End of story.
--Shih Tzu's NEED to be groomed, if not brushed.  Their hair WILL get knotted.  If they are not regularly groomed, they can get painfully knotted and it's animal abuse.  You can brush them on a daily basis but I strongly recommend sending them to a trusted groomer because if you don't know how to properly brush, you WILL miss the correct areas to brush that are prone to knots.
--If you bathe your Shih Tzu.. DO NOT GET WATER IN THEIR NOSE!!! You can literally drown your dog because their nozzle is so short. (if you don't know what you are doing, don't wash them PLEASE, let someone else do it or just don't wash their face!  Also, if you wash them, wash them with special dog shampoo and BE SURE you rinse them well or you WILL give them hot spots! Basically, if you think you've rinsed them enough- rinse them more because their hair holds soap more than you know!)
--Shih Tzu's need a good food, preferably one that is NOT canned food and does NOT have corn starch in it.  Do your research-- Grocery store food= not a good diet.

All in all.. Love your Pet and treat them like family!

Bits of Becky: August

Hi friends! Geez Louise this summer has been super crazy! I can't think of one free weekend this whole month and it's been awesome, yet a little exhausting. And these "bit" updates are looking pretty lame this month with nothing new to report really but  here is what's been happening in my life lately and with some Instagram shots from the month! (follow me @bforbecky)

Reading: Still just reading baby websites! I love Alphamom's Pregnancy Calendar so that is my weekly go to! I was introduced to the site at ALTNY back when I was still keeping my bump under wraps and have been getting tons of goo info from it ever since!

Also, my sister in law just started her own blog! Jenn is now the proud author of Classy Teacher Clothes, which gives fashion inspiration to teachers and working professionals. Please go give her some love!
Watching: America's Got Talent. Come on who doesn't love this show?

Listening: I have no good music right now. I am waiting for October when Dr Dog, Arcade Fire and the Head and the Heart allllllll release new albums!!

Crafting: Still working on crocheting my baby blanket. As it gets bigger the longer it takes to make a row and the more discouraging it is.

Offline: There is so much to this category! A NYC trip to the Punk to Chaos exhibit. A day trip full of antiquing in antique store heaven! Camping trip to Caledonia State Park. A quick beach trip down to Cape May, NJ. All this with a growing belly and a husband who looks more freaked out by the minute. Oh, adulthood.

Photo Info: At the MET, NYC with my sister in law, Pyrex heaven, Joy, my favorite morning juice glass, of course more Joy, my little Scotty camper, J and I at Mister Eds, my camping partners also at Mister Eds, funky mushrooms at our campgrounds, Cape May and Pearl since there were 2 Joy pictures.

Furry Fridays: Ali Thompson Art

Brought to you weekly by Becky and Steph!
Meet Ali & Sparkles from Ali Thompson Art

Hi! My name is Ali Thompson, and I'm an artist and blogger. My website is You can check out my blog and look at my art. Maybe you could buy some art, who knows?
But today, I am talking about my cats, not my art. Which is great, because almost any conversation I have with another pet owner will eventually turn into one about my cats. Were we talking about serious politics? Well, we're not any more because I have cats. And cats are way less depressing than politics.DSC00217
I have three cats-- Tifa, Foxy, and Sparkles. But I really want to talk about Sparkles the most.
Sparkles was 11 years old when I got her from the Philadelphia SPCA shelter. She had been there for 8 months, and she was pretty grumpy. And when I say grumpy, I mean she hated everything and everyone in the entire world.DSC00267
I didn't intend to get a third cat. I was trying to help my mom pick out a cat for herself, and I got caught by ads from people begging someone to take beloved pets they couldn't keep any more. I looked around my house, and I thought to myself, I can take another cat. I have room.
At the shelter, I had already picked out a different cat. A younger cat. A less angry cat.
But the staff of the shelter wanted me to meet Sparkles. She had been there so long, they said. We'll waive the fees, they said. She's really quite sweet, they said.
DSC_0115“RRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrr!” said Sparkles, crouching in the back of a small cage, glaring her panther glare at me.
For some reason, I said ok. I'll take her. It might have been when I saw her vampire fangs.
Did I mention that she has vampire fangs? It's hard to tell in her pictures, and she doesn't really like having pictures taken. I think I fell in love with her a little right then when I saw her fangs.
And it's took a while for her to integrate into the house. She hid in the basement. She hid under the couch. She staked out under the table in the dining room and defended it which much growling.
She'll never be a lap cat, and she doesn't tolerate much foolishness like petting, unless it's from my boyfriend. She adores my boyfriend. And she's funny. She loves treats more than any other cat I've ever seen. We taught her to sit on command, because she'll do anything for treats.
I told you all that to tell you this. If you're thinking about adopting a pet, think about one that's older. Sparkles was someone else's pet, until they couldn't keep her anymore. Older animals have a hard time being adopted because they aren't as cute as a kitten or puppy. A lot of them were pets, and they're upset by being in the shelter. So they may not be as friendly as another cat, which means it's even harder for them to be adopted.SparklesBut I couldn't stand to think of Sparkles spending her cat retirement years in cat jail. And I've never been sorry. She's an excellent and awesome cat. So for your next new animal, think about going older.

Bumps Galore

Okay, I know most of us bloggers are women and the blogs that I read we are all relatively close in age. You know what age that appears to be? Baby making age! Is it just me or have a lot of pregnancy announcements been filling up your bloglovin' feed? Maybe I am just more aware because I am one of those correct baby makers but I wanted to give a shout out to my fellow mamas to be and if you are interested in their baby making process go ahead and check them out. Their blogs are worth the jump!

Furry Fridays: Art of the Heart

Brought to you weekly by Becky and Steph!
Meet Amy and her fur babies!

I'm Amy from ART of the HEART... and these are mine and husband's babies,
Harper and Brutus....
Harper is our Great Dane and Brutus is our English bulldog.
Harper is an AKC registered blue Great Dane. My husband got her for me from a
breeder in AR when she was 8 weeks old. She was 8 pounds, and she was a clumsy,
floppy little puppy with huge paws and loooong legs. It took her almost a year
 to grow into those legs!
When I first got her, she would take naps on my chest or lap, now
only her head will fit in my lap! She still thinks she's a lap dog and will sometimes
sit on me (like a person) as if I'm a chair! She grew up SO fast. Since danes grow
at such a rapid pace, it's recommended that you strictly schedule 2-3 feedings a
day in certain size portions. It is also highly recommended that you feed them high
protein, large breed puppy food until they are 2 years old. I use Eukanuba large
breed puppy. Harper just turned 2 on July 27th and she is about 150lbs now!
I've been through so much with this baby since I got her. At about 4 months old,
she got parvo. If you know anything about puppies with parvo, you know it's
pretty much the worst thing ever. She stopped eating and threw up constantly.
She lost tons of weight and refused to even drink. It got to the point where I
had to force Gatorade down her throat with a large feeding syringe to keep
her hydrated. FINALLY, it got so bad that my husband drove 5 hours (where
his veterinarian uncle works/lives in Chattanooga, TN) in the middle of the night.
His uncle quickly put her on an IV drip and treated her for about 2 weeks. Thank
God she pulled through. We traveled back to Chatt. and picked up a hyper, healthy
pup. I could probably write a book of stories about Harper growing up, but that
would take forever!
Brutus is my husband, Cody's, CKC registered English bulldog. Cody got Brutus at
6 months old from some friends who could no longer take care of him. It's sad that
we didn't get to raise him from puppyhood but Cody loves him so much. He's a feisty
character who is VERY protective. We also think he's partially blind because he barks
at anything out of the ordinary... even if it's one of us wearing something like a motorcycle
helmet or holding something large. It's like he can only see silhouettes and can't clearly
 identify things. Kind of strange.
Brutus has remained fairly healthy. He has a form of mange that is hereditary and treatable
but not curable which makes him unsuitable for breeding, so we got him neutered pretty
quickly to get that over with. It also makes him shed in massive amounts which kind of
get annoying to constantly clean up. Can you tell which pup I like better? Haha.
I do love Brutus though, he's very playful and energetic. He likes to rare up on his
hind legs and slam his front feet down on the floor when he plays. He also bounces
around and turns circles when he's excited. It's very cute!
So... Those are our children! They are definitely more than just pets. We love our little family.

Furry Fridays: The Nautical Owl (again!)

Brought to you weekly by Becky and Steph!
We featured Megan from The Nautical Owl and her pup Jarvis a couple months ago and today we are giving you a little update on his health status.

Me&Jarvis 8-5-13 002
Megan posted this about puppy Jarvis:
As you may know, back in May we started our journey in diagnosing him. Lots of support, love and money later we found out he has a disease called SIBO.
In early June, baby Jarvis weighed in at 30 pounds. He was grossly underweight. So much so, that you could see all of his ribs, his shoulder blades and even his hip bones. We knew something was wrong. And we had to act quickly.
Through so much support with The Hungry Jarvis Fund we were able to cover half of his vet costs other sacrifices made up the rest.
And I wanted to let you guys know that he is recovering beautifully.
At last weigh in, he was 50 pounds.
This means in a little over a month, my little man has gained 20 pounds! Isn't that amazing? He's not so little anymore. I think he had a lot of growing up to catch up with. He's almost as big as his brother, Hank. Jarvis is acting more puppy than ever now. And he's really loving life!
Now, we are faced with normal dog issues that we could never address before because of the disease, like potty training. He's doing so well while in the house. But we are still having issues with him pottying in the kennel. It's been rough on that front. We'll pull through though.
Jarvis took us through a toxicity scare this past week. A trip to the emergency vet gave us little information besides the fact that he had eaten something poisonous to him. It was a rough 48 hours, but little man pulled through and it amazing again.
Just another set up. Poor guy has had many.
And so has our bank account. Ugh.
He is still on his probiotic every day. As well as a vitamin, his prescription Tylan, calorie booster and specialty food. It's an expensive little bugger. But I love him so much. I really do. If you have any extra love to spare, I'd be so grateful if you could donate to the fund. It would me the world to us.
This is a before picture of Jarvis.
Here are current healthy and happy pictures!

Furry Fridays: Cotton & Boots

Brought to you weekly by Becky and Steph
Today welcome Brooks and her two adorable fur children!!

Hello B is for Becky-ers!
I'm Brooks from Cotton & Boots. I'd love to introduce y'all to my two children. Yes, my children are my dogs.
That's Sinatra and Prim. Sinatra's the big, handsome lab and Prim's the minpin who will give you a run for your money.

Sinatra was my 18th birthday present and 7 years later, he's still going strong. He'll put your stamina to shame.  He is obsessed with water and can even manage to "swim" in a puddle. Sinatra will even play fetch with himself.  Oh, and another thing about Sinatra? He can sing. Yeah, you heard me.. my sweet boy can sing.  He loves to sing to Frank Sinatra, but he's starting to warm up to other artists too. You can see him crooning here.

And Prim? She's my baby girl, mountain goat, firecracker and pistol. She loves sitting in weird places.

And she loves Auburn football.

She's also known to sneak off before bedtime and slide under our covers - she's a smart cookie, that one. She's also our watchdog, our snuggler, and our trouble maker. You know the dogs that panic when you leave? That's her.

And together, they're partners in crime. Protecting our home from one bird at a time.

When it comes to choosing dogs, it was easy. I grew up with labs, they have such a great temperament and are extremely loyal. Minpin have that spunky personality that makes you wonder if they're human at times. Either way, when it comes to choosing a dog, research, research, research. Find what you want in a dog (coat length, temperament, size) and if all else fail, google it. I found the minpin breed through a friend of mine, so always ask around.

I hope y'all stop by and say hello to us over at Cotton & Boots
