Bits of Becky: January

What's been happening in my life lately and some Instagram shots from the month.

Reading: The Vanishers by Heidi Julavits (read a review about it here) and I've been listening to the 5th book in the Mortal Instruments series, City of Lost Souls. I tried reading this book last year and it annoyed me, I find it's much easier to listen too than read for some reason.

Listening: Jessie Baylin's "Little Spark" and Ellie Goudling's "Lights". I'm on a chick music kick right now!

Watching: The end of 30 Rock. Man, I loved that show!

Crafting: Still crocheting and knitting away! I'm working on a baby shower gift for my friend! I'll share it when I'm done.

Offline: Snowboarding and planning for the summer already. Just throwing this out there but I'm planning on joining the fun and going to ALT Summit NYC this year! Anyone else thinking about going??? I've got a blogging friend who is joining me but I want to make and see many more!!!!

I've noticed many new followers and friends stopping by here lately! Welcome and thanks for reading. I'm opening up the comments to ask me any questions you would like to ask me! I will answer them in a post coming up. Don't be shy, let's get to know each other better!

Jonathan on How He Dreams

This was a conversation we had in the middle of the night when Jonathan, like usual, is falling asleep with this glasses on.

Becky: "Take your glasses off."
Jonathan: "No, I can't take my glasses off. How am I going to see my dreams?"
Becky: "....."

He kept his glasses on that night.

Furry Fridays: Harbor Cottage

Brought to you by Steph and Becky!
Today we have one of my favorite blogging friends, Kelsey and her super cute pug Angie!

Hi guys! I'm Kelsey from Harbor Cottage. I'm here to share with you the joy of my little Angie girl.

First of all, anyone who tells you that pets love both "owners" equally is a liar. Every animal has a favorite... and I'm Angie's. My husband would argue this point, but he's wrong.

We brought Angie into our home in September of 2011. She was SERIOUSLY SMALL. I think she was three months and I swear she was a little runt. She's pedigree and we have fancy papers to prove it. I'm really not into that stuff, but I guess the breeder was. Either way, we love our little tiny girl.

Anyway, the story of Angie doesn't really begin in September of 2011. It begins in February of that same year with another furry friend. My grandpa had passed away in 2012 and my grandma was having a hard time taking care of his dog Shadow. Shadow was aptly named after the fact that she would literally follow my grandpa around all day. She was his "shadow" and once she even saved him from a dog attack on their daily walk. So, to help my grandma out, Anthony and I volunteered to take her in. We spent 6 months with Shadow. We took her to get her hair cut, we gave her baths, we'd take her on walks, and we would pet her 'til the cows come home. But she was old. She was 14 when we took her, and 6 months into it the vet advised me to put her down. It was really difficult because she was the type of dog that never looked old. She was wagging that tail all the way to her death bed. But, when your dog can barely walk and is scratching itself to death you can't lie to yourself anymore. You can read more about the passing of Shadow in this post.

So, after paying for a ton of vet bills and putting Shadow down, my grandma offered to get us a dog. We chose a $700 pug (which we later found out was $650 over my grandma's budget - big financial whoops!) It didn't mater though because we freaking loved the breed all of a sudden. In all honesty, the only reason we got a pug is because all the Halloween costumes were in the stores and all of them had pugs in them. We fell in love by accident. We wanted another shepherd or a lab, but our house was too small and our landlord advised us to chose a smaller breed.

On a side note -- If we EVER adopt another animal it will be from the humane society. There are too many animals already without breeders creating more. Just saying...

We drove out to the breeder one night and brought Angie home. She was so small she could fit into our hands. I LOVED it!
We immediately trained her to sleep in her bed on the floor. We never crate trained her. We got her a dog door and she never used pee pads. She wasn't allowed on the furniture or the bed. Flash forward to now and she has us wrapped around her little finger. She sleeps in our bed now and lives on the couch when we're home with her, but she does spend her days on a comfy carpet in our garage. So I guess we all got a little bit of what we wanted, right? We pretend we have a perfectly trained dog, and Angie wears her invisible crown all day and night bossing us around like her minions.

But really, she is a great dog. She makes friends with every animal and person that she meets. She loves to go hiking with us and she is the best at playing fetch. She will eat any vegetable you hand her, and she is 100% in love with our cat Axel. We always say they are best buds - Axel Rose and Angie Stone. (Can you tell what type of music we listen to?)

Pugs are a lot of fun because they make silly faces (and noises), and they always keep you smiling even when they've done something wrong. We love ours...can you tell?

I blog about dresses with a husband!

I can't talk about our weekend with out gushing about my new fancy outfit. I can't gush about my new fancy outfit with out talking about Jonathan's new fancy outfit so what we've got here is a couple outfit post!

I have really been trying to be good about limiting my fashion spending. I was totally going to just wear a dress out of my closet and I was fine with that. Jonathan and I went on a shopping spree for his fancy new duds for this weekend and since he rarely wears anything other than a work uniform or jeans he was in need of a new somethin'- somethin'. After a day of shopping I found nothing for me, another sign I should wear something out of my closet. Then I found things piece by piece, a clearance cape, shoes on sale, a cute dress.... So I didn't just wear some old dress out of my closet.

Weekend Adventures: A Wedding in Philly

This past weekend my husband's cousin was married in the city of brotherly love, Philadelphia. The ceremony was in the beautiful Masonic temple across the street from City Hall. Then the party started after hours in the Franklin Institute. Us guests were allowed to roam the exhibits in the museum during cocktail hour and then we boogied the night away with Ben. It was a wonderful weekend of family, fun and of course love.

Plus a shout out to Sarah's Floral Design for those gorgeous center pieces!

Furry Fridays: My Mod Style

Brought to you by Steph and Becky!
Get ready for an awesome Furry Friday today with Jessie and her gang of furry love! Thanks Jessie!

Hello! My name is Jessie and I blog over at My Mod Style. I blog about interior design, saving the planet, being vegan and my love for life. A huge part of my life is my pet family. You may read my post about my pet family and wonder if I am a pet hoarder. I promise you that I am not. Animal lover, YES. Hoarder, No. When I was a kid growing up we always had lots of pets. Now as an adult, it's the same way. My pets are truly my Fur Babies and I love them with all my heart. I have 6 total, two dogs and 4 cats. Here they all are pictured below...

My original plan for this post was to get a group photo of everyone together. I guess you could say a pet family portrait. Well, it didn't happen that way and didn't go as planned. Sammy refused to come out of the basement because she sensed something was "up" and just hid from me. The others didn't pose well or didn't make it on the couch before the timer went off. FAIL. (But still funny.)

Muffins is the oldest. She is a Yorkshire Terrier and just turned 13 years old. She was my first real pet that was my own. I got her when I was 18 years old. Of course she is my baby. She has been through thick and thin with me and moved 9 times! Two years ago I lived in California with my husband for about 4 months. Just her and I road in my car by ourselves across the country! She loved being a "California Girl." I hope to take her there this year on vacation because she is getting so old. In her entire 13 years of life I never saw her more happy then when she was on the beach smelling the ocean air.

How did I end up with so many pets? Well Simon came next. He was just a cute kitten that was at my mom's house from a litter one of her cats had. He was my first cat. That was 10 years ago! Simon is so beautiful. He loves to cuddle with you and tends to forget how big he is. He is the type of cat that puts his face right in yours till you pet him. He also thinks the house is his and everything in it. He runs the show.

A few years later a friend of mine showed up at my doorstep with a tiny gray kitten. She had found him on the side of the road and asked me if I wanted him. At first I didn't want anymore pets, but was sad to think of this sick little kitten not having a home. That's how I ended up with Norman. (It's so easy to end up with a lot of pets!!) He is the sweetest of them all. He is kinda viewed as the "mother". I know that sounds strange, but they all love him. They all seek him out because they love to cuddle with Norman. Norman will also groom them all. He is also the only cat you will ever see tolerate Chloe.

Fast forward a few mores years. My husband and I bought a house that needed remodeled. During the remodel we lived in my parents basement and my mom had another litter of kitties. Needless to say my heart melted when I saw Sammy and Barrett. They are both my shy kitties. They pretty much only like me but tolerate my husband sometimes. When cats are small and cute, it's so easy to end up with a lot and not think anything of it. It hasn't always been easy having so many pets. We move them with us everywhere we go. Including a 1,200 mile move across the country. They have gotten used to all the moving. I think as long as they are always together and with us they seem to adjust well.

Jessie Pets Sammy Barrett

Before we moved across the country, there was a day we went to Starbucks to get coffee. We decided to just walk into a pet store just to look at animals. Well I ended up going home with a Chihuahua. That's how we ended up with Chloe. She is a hand full. I love her to death but she keeps you on your toes all the time. She is very mischievous. She loves to eat, so I always have to make sure she isn't eating everyone else's food. She loves to cuddle and build little "caves" out of blankets. She is also very loyal.

Jessie Pets Chloe

You can imagine there is never a dull moment in my house. We truly are a family and everyone really does coexist well together. My advise for picking out a pet would be do your research first. Talk to other people who have pets. The hardest thing for us is having dogs with wanting to travel a lot. I never boarded them when they were young, so I won't do it now. You have to start that at a young age I think. Also, dogs take so much more work then cats. Cats can be left alone and pretty much take care of themselves. Make sure you pick a pet that fits into your lifestyle. So many people don't do this and end up having to give them up.

I also highly recommend saving animals from shelters. I adopted Chloe from a pet store which I am not proud of now. I think rescuing a homeless animal from a shelter is one of the most rewarding things you can do. I worked at a shelter for 3 months and learned a lot in that short time period. Not all the animals there are abused or mean. They often have purebred dogs and puppies as well. A lot of times if you go to a shelter the animal will pick you. :)

I really enjoyed sharing this post and hope you enjoyed reading it. Please feel free to stop by my blog and say HELLO! Thanks Becky and Steph for having me!

The Winter Blues Rescue: Snow

I only need one thing to kick my winter blues. Snowboarding. Even though the conditions here in Central PA are lacking it's still awesome to me. Snow and snowboard are my favorites. This is what I'm  doing with all my spare time right now and loving it.

Pray for a blizzard for me. Thanks! XOXO

Furry Fridays: Life, Actually

Brought to you by Steph and Becky!
Give a warm welcome to another Stephanie and that sweet furry Walter!

Hi! I'm Stephanie from Life, Actually. My blog is about...well life. One of my features is 'Fridays with Walter' - a weekly post about what my pup has been up to all week. He's a crazy, hyper, loving Boggle (Boston Terrier/Beagle mix). I've had dogs for most of my life, but I've never had a dog as loving as Walter. He gives kisses all the time (probably way too much) and he actually gives hugs. Real hugs. When I get home from work or if I'm feeling sad he will put his arms (legs?) around my neck and put his head on my shoulder and give a quick hug. It's too dang cute! Walter was given to me by an ex boyfriend. I was super lucky and got to keep him when the relationship ended. I would have been devastated if I couldn't have kept my baby!

I have a co-worker that actually helps out the Humane Society in Illinois. He always talks about the great dogs they get there. So, if you're in the Missouri/Illinois area check them out, here (or any Humane Society for that matter - great place to adopt a pet)!
Thanks for having me!

I blog about skirts in 2013

Winter skirt wearing comes with a problem for me. I'm cold. I wear skirts because skirts are like my pajamas but it does get annoying. I wear tights but my office is freezing and all around me are people wearing tank tops like it's summer and they are super surprised to hear of someone being cold. I don't know who has the problem, them or me? Why are they always hot??? Huh?

Now on to a semi unrelated topic, new years resolutions. I know I'm late to this resolution business, but I really wasn't into it on January 1st. Maybe I was still in a sugar comma from Christmas. Who knows? I really don't make resolutions I come up with dreams and I make them happen because I'm a dream maker. Anyways, mine is a short list this year and one (or more) involve clothing so that's how this all ties in.

2013 Dream List:
- Go to at least 5 places I've never been
- Discover more of my home state
- Cut way back on my clothing spending
- Wear that shit at the back of the closet or get rid of it
- Create more and actually FINISH stuff
- Read/ listen to 52 books
- Put more effort into this blog
- Save some cas$h money

Here we go, wish me luck!

My Everyday Eye

I have a thing for make-up. On a bi-annual basis I'll walk into MAC and ask them to give me a new face. For the longest time though I would never get any eye make-up. I would strictly do mascara and maybe an added eye liner on a good day. Earlier this year when I was getting a new face I was asked about my eyes and I tried out a new thing for me, eye shadow. Now my daily staple are these to light shades. They are neutral and go with everything but eye shadow does give you a little somethin' - somethin', you know?!?

MAC Naked Lunch is the lightest shade and put that all over your eye lid. Then accent with MAC Soft Brown in the outside crease. Add mascara, done. Easy peasy.

No way is this an advertisement for MAC, I'm just crazy brand loyal to them! If you collect 6 empty MAC containers you can return them to the store for a free lipstick or eye shadow. This is why I tried out these shadows in the first place, because home girl got them for FREE! Now they sucked me in forever. Hahaha!

Have you guys ever tried MAC? What are your favorite cosmetic products???

Jonathan on Reading my Body Language

"I may not be able to read your body language that well but I do know that if you start blinking a lot your fucking pissed off."

It's funny the things you don't really know about yourself. Like, how am I to know that when I'm pissed off I blink way more than usual? I don't do this on purpose! Luckily I have Jonathan to tell me these things.

Furry Fridays: Loving Life in the Fab Lane

Brought to you by Steph and Becky!
Today we have the cutest little ball of fur and Jo. Thanks Jo!

Hello! I'm Jo from Loving Life in the Fab Lane Blog.

I was thrilled when Becky from B is for Becky blog asked me to be a guest on Furry Fridays. There is nothing I love more than my little ball of fur named Lily.

My husband got Lily for me a couple of months ago.
We rescued her from what looked like a little puppy mill.  She is a 15 month old "full blooded long hair chihuahua." they say. But we didn't care.  As soon as we saw the conditions she was in, we wanted her!
Lily The night we brought her home.
Lily dressed up.
Listen y'all:
This is the prime reason you should have children! If you don't, you end up being the crazy chihuahua lady who dresses up your dog and acts like your dog is your child!

Our first family photo on Thanksgiving.

Lily at Bath time.

Lily enjoys walks at the park and running through the leaves.

Kirby and Lily
Lily already has several friends: Elle Mae, Hemi, Otis and Kirby.
Kirby is my Mom's dog.  He is an Irish terrier. Every time I go back home to visit my family, Lily gets super excited.  She and Kirby play for hours.

Miss Lily in her Christmas dress & bow.
My Aunt Rhena is the best! She made all of Lily's bows.  She is also the one who potty trained Lily in one week. Wait, what? Shut the front door! That's right, one week! We use puppy training pads. I was a little anemic, feeling terrible and had so much going on with school, potty training her was a nightmare.  I was on the verge of tears and my Aunt offered to take her and potty train her.  She did an amazing job because it is very rare when Lily has an accident!
(If you have any questions on puppy training pads feel free to ask!)

Lily enjoying her Christmas.

Lily and Mommy.
(You know you have officially crossed the cray-cray line when you dress your dog to match yourself!)

Lily's first snow!!! Her reaction was WTF!?!?

I have only had Lily for 2 months.  In this short time, I feel as if I have had her forever.  I just love her so much.  Once I am finished with school I think Lily would love to have an older sibling from the local Humane Society.

Thanks Becky ans Steph for letting me share Lily's story :)
