Furry Fridays: Total Basset Case

FurryFriday
Brought to you by Steph and Becky!
Today welcome Sarah and Floyd!

Hi there B is for Becky-ers!
I'm Sarah and I blog over at Total Basset Case.
If you couldn't guess, we have a basset hound.
His name is Floyd.
He is a rascal and a half and also the biggest sweet heart you've ever met.

As much as Floyd looks like a 'dog', he isn't much of a dog.
In fact, he really doesn't do anything that 'normal' dogs do.
He doesn't:
-play fetch
-catch a ball
-sleep in a dog bed
-walk very well on a leash (he'd rather sit)
-eat normal dog food (mr. sensitive stomach over here)
However, he does:
-snuggle like it's his job
 -bring you beers
 -help load the dishwasher
-protect the neighborhood
I mean, you can't deny that precious face.
Even if he can't fetch a ball...

Thank you Becky and Steph for having us over today!
We are so happy to be a part of Furry Friends!
Please come over and say hello to Floyd and I!

#ALTNYC

Last week I went to Alt Summit in New York City. Or what us bloggers quickly labeled as AltNYC. I had the idea, I found a friend that was willing to travel with me (thanks Kate!!), I successfully bought tickets and booked a hotel room and made it there but I was scared. It's so intimidating to be in a room full of bloggers, they all look fabulous, they are all crazy talented and they all seem to have their shit together. Even after thinking about what I was going to say when I got the question "What do you blog about?"I still just mumbled some crap like my dogs, my sweet vintage camper, ummmmm dumb stuff my husband says to me. I had no clear answer, not like some pros I met who have mission statements for their site.

I'm glad I took the time, money and energy to go to Alt Summit. I really am. It made me think about this space. Not like I'm going to quit my day job and be a professional blogger or anything, but I am going to devote some more time to it. I need to get MY shit together.

I also saw Martha Stewart.

Furry Fridays - Aimee from Irresistible Pets

FurryFriday
Brought to you by Steph and Becky!
Meet Aimee and her adorable Chihuahua, Chuy!!!

My name is Aimee and I blog at Irresistible Pets and Irresistible Icing. I have a Chihuahua named Chuy and he is what inspired me to start my pet blog, Irresistible Pets. I was going to write some sort of top tips post for Furry Friday but instead I’ve decided to dedicate this post to Chuy. Tomorrow, June 22nd, Chuy turns 4 years old.  He spent all of last weekend in the ER and was diagnosed with compressed disc space. We have a long road ahead of us as he needs further testing and possibly spinal surgery.
Up until now Chuy has been the most energetic, wild, and crazy little Chihuahua ever! Seeing him in pain and not as spunky is breaking my heart. I hope we he will recover and get back to driving me nuts!
Aimee and Chuy
There are a million reasons why I think Chuy is irresistible but here are my top five.
1. Chuy is My Little Shadow
One of my favorite parts of the day is when I hear little paws pushing my office door open. I’m extremely grateful to work from home as an Instructional Designer. I LOVE it because I get to spend my entire day with Chuy sitting next to me. Every time I go downstairs or even to the bathroom, he follows me! I think it’s adorable and can’t imagine working in an office ever again.

2. Chuy Cheers Me Up
It’s true what they say about dogs making you feel happier. I can have the worst day but the minute I see Chuy or cuddle with him, I forget about it. He’s only been in my life for 3 years but he’s brought so much joy and happiness . . . and a few chewed up shoes but he’s worth it!
Chuy
3. Chuy Understands Me
I know. That probably sounds nuts, right? I swear that Chuy understands me and what I’m going through. When I had my gallbladder removed a few months ago and was at home recovering, Chuy never left my side. He also never jumped on me as if he knew I was recovering. I can’t even put it into words. When I’m sad, he looks me right in the eyes as if he’s telling me “everything is ok.”

4. Chuy Made My Husband a Better Person
Chuy has changed my husband . . . not that he wasn’t already a great person before Chuy. He’s more compassionate, emotional, and kind. Chuy taught him how to love deeper. I never used to see my husband tear up at anything. Now if he hears a sad story about animals, I swear I see his eyes getting red lol.
Family
5. Chuy Keeps Me Active
I love Chuy for making me take walks when I really didn’t want to. I love him for allowing me to discover new things in my city that I never knew existed! My favorite thing ever is to get in the car and just go exploring with Chuy.
Chuy isn’t just some little Chihuahua. He is family and he has changed me and everyone he meets in more ways than he’ll ever know. I love you so much little monster! Happy 4th birthday! (And many more!)

Furry Fridays: Comfy Town Chronicles

FurryFriday
It's time to meet Joy and Ghandi!

Well, for me it's SCALY Friday!
My husband is allergic to everything with fur, so we have reptiles. We had a tortoise and a python, now we have this Dumeril's boa constrictor.
Ghandi
His name is Ghandi and he's gentle, meek and afraid of everything. He's a big sweetie and he's the best pet we have ever had!
This picture is from a few years ago, he's bigger now, about 5 1/2 feet long. They can get up to 6-6 1/2 feet (some bigger if you feed them aggressively, which we do not.) They live up to 15 years, some longer.
He only eats every 10-14 days, so he only poops that often. His cage just needs to be cleaned out about once a week. Other than giving him fresh water, baths in the tub and taking him out for exercise, that is ALL we have to do to care for him.
He's THE BEST! I highly recommend snakes as pets, as long as you are not squeemish about what they eat: Rodents. Mice, rats, the larger ones eat larger things. Our still eats large rats. He is a ground snake and at 6 years of age, he is really getting HEAVY, which is one thing you might want to think about when considering a pet. It's not exactly easy to lift him out for baths and cleaning his cage, but I have no muscle and I am able to do it.

Kitchen Remodel (Part 2)

One thing I've always wanted in this house is a new back door. Now I'm not talking about just a fancy new door, I'm talking whole new door location! The current back door enters into our basement stairway and then you have to step up into the kitchen. So a baby or a drunk visitor could take two steps in the wrong direction and fall down the basement steps. It's a liability! So I wanted the back door to enter straight into the kitchen like a normal door should.
Above is the "before" of the back of our house.

Here is the new door location. We are eliminating the window for more wall cabinet space and getting a door with full glass so we don't loose any of the natural light in the room.

Jonathan framed in the new door and did everything needed to secure the door in. It's more work than I would have imagined, but really am I surprised placing a door where there wasn't one before?!?

Next up- closing in the old back door!

Bluebird Babies

Remember the little bluebirds in our bird house? Those eggs are now full blown bird babies! They are already busting out of the house and flying away on their own!! They're too cute, I can't handle it.

Furry Fridays: Two Steps Forward

FurryFriday
Brought to you by Steph and Becky!
Today, meet Jenny & her Fur Crew!

I am the proud mommy of three fur babies, a five-year-old rottweiler/husky mix (we call her a rotsky) named Dakota, a four-year-old orange tabby named Nachos, and a three-year-old orange and white tabby named Muenster. Nachos and Muenster are actually brothers, from two different litters. They have the same mother cat, and we think the same father cat but cannot be certain.

When I first started dating my now husband, Thom, he already had Dakota. At the time, I had a fear of dogs, and was more than a little nervous about being around her. The first time I met Dakota, she growled at me, and scared the living daylights out of me. Within a matter of days, things changed. Dakota is now my adventure buddy. She loves to go hiking with me, and I even bought her a hiking pack of her own. We have climbed two mountains together. I swear she is part mountain goat. The first time I took her up a mountain, a snarky old guy was coming down while I was going up. He looked at me and Dakota and scoffed, "Nice pooch, how exactly do you plan to get her up to the top?" At the time, I was not sure myself, but I ignored him. When we got to the steep part of the mountain, I was trying to figure out how to get myself up. I looked straight up, and there was Dakota, about 4 feet above me, all happy-panting with a face of "come on mom!" We are best buddies now, and no one believes me when I say that I used to strongly dislike dogs.

Nachos came into my life shortly after I moved in with Thom halfway across the country from where I grew up. I have always had kitties around, and while I enjoyed having a dog around, I was really homesick. Thom's mother had taken in a stray cat, and soon after found out she was pregnant. Nachos turned six weeks old on my birthday, and was the best birthday present I have ever gotten. He immediately became best buddies with Dakota. The still like to snuggle up together, and Nachos can frequently be found curled up in Dakota's kennel. He is very shy kitty, but once he warms up to you, he is extremely sweet and affectionate. He loves boxes and sunbeams, and on cold winter nights, will snuggle up with me and Thom, under the blankets.

Muenster arrived a year later. Thom's mother tried to get her cat fixed, only to find out that she was expecting another litter. I was at home with an inner ear infection and Thom had to run to his mother's house. Muenster toddled right up to Thom. He then curled up in Thom's shirt pocket and went to sleep. He was a little over six weeks old at the time and fully weaned. Not wanting to wake a sleeping baby, Thom brought him home. Muenster and Nachos immediately bonded, and have been inseparable since. Wherever Nachos curls up to go to sleep, Muenster is usually close by, often times snuggled up with him. We refer to our boys as "the brother's cheese."
Moving Day (1)
Tip for choosing a pet: Let your pet choose you. Before adopting, visit the litter, or have an interaction at the local shelter. When your furbaby finds you, you will know.
Nachos (6)
Pet care tip: Both of our kitties had ear mites when they first came home. We treated them with olive oil and it worked like a charm. There are a lot of over-the-counter (and pricey) ear mite medications available at your local pet shop, but olive oil is the best. The oil will smother the mites and their larvae while at the same time soothing your pet's ears. Just a few drops and you should see improvement in a day or two.
